Congressman Mike Lawler and Congressman Ritchie Torres have introduced legislation aimed at addressing antisemitism on college campuses. The legislation, known as the College Oversight and Legal Updates Mandating Bias Investigations and Accountability (COLUMBIA) Act, would empower the federal Department of Education to impose a third-party antisemitism monitor on any college or university receiving federal funding.

"Rising antisemitism on our college campuses is a major concern and we must act to ensure the safety of students," said Congressman Lawler.

Congressman Torres emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "This is a blatant violation of Title VI and the federal government cannot allow this to continue unchecked."

The monitor appointed by the Secretary of Education would evaluate the progress made by colleges in combating antisemitism and issue policy recommendations as needed. Failure to comply with the monitorship would result in the loss of federal funds.

The lawmakers stressed the need for accountability in addressing antisemitism on campuses. Congressman Torres highlighted the importance of Congress taking action to protect Jewish students who feel unsafe due to their religious and ethnic identity.

The legislation was introduced in response to recent demonstrations at Columbia University, with Congressman Torres calling it "the straw that has broken the camel’s back." He urged his colleagues in the House to join him in supporting the COLUMBIA Act.

The 17th Congressional District of New York, represented by Congressman Lawler, covers areas north of New York City including Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
