Today Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) addressed concerns raised by residents regarding a proposed battery storage project in the Town of Carmel. Lawler emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough environmental impact review and assessing potential impacts on air quality, water tables, health outcomes, and fire safety in the area. Lawler also expressed opposition to energy decisions made by New York State and Governor Hochul's attempted takeover of local zoning and planning boards.

Lawler stressed the significance of community involvement in decisions that affect them, stating, "Decisions that impact local communities need to be made by the residents of them." He urged residents of Somers and Carmel to actively participate in the planning board's consideration of the proposal by voicing their opinions.

The proposed battery storage project has sparked concerns among residents of Mahopac and Somers, prompting Lawler to advocate for a transparent and inclusive review process. The 17th Congressional District of New York, represented by Lawler, encompasses areas in Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
