Congressmen Mike Lawler and Ritchie Torres have reintroduced a bill to posthumously award James Earl Jones with the Congressional Gold Medal. This honor aims to recognize Jones for his significant contributions to American arts and culture, as well as his service to the nation.

James Earl Jones, known for his roles as Darth Vader in “Star Wars” and Mufasa in “The Lion King,” had a career that spanned decades on both stage and screen. Born in Mississippi, he overcame a childhood stutter with encouragement from his high school teacher. He studied at the University of Michigan before pursuing acting full-time after serving in the U.S. Army.

Jones’s work has earned him an EGOT—Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards—making him one of the most celebrated actors in history. His performances have been recognized not only for their artistic merit but also for breaking barriers within the industry.

Congressman Mike Lawler emphasized Jones’s impact: “James Earl Jones was a national treasure – an artist whose voice and presence have left his mark on American culture.” Lawler is leading efforts to secure this honor for Jones as a constituent of New York’s 17th District.

Ritchie Torres added, “James Earl Jones is the pinnacle of Black American excellence. He helped pave the way for our community in Hollywood.” Torres supports recognizing Jones’s achievements through this prestigious award.

Previously during the 118th Congress, this legislation was co-led by Torres and former Congressman Marc Molinaro and cosponsored by 194 U.S. representatives. The bill reflects bipartisan support across different districts.

Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District which includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
