Washington, D.C. – Congressman Mike Lawler announced the successful passage of legislation that will increase the state and local tax deduction to $40,000 for the next decade. This measure aims to alleviate financial burdens on New Yorkers affected by what he described as excessive state spending.
Lawler credited the SALT Caucus’s negotiations with Speaker Johnson and President Trump for this legislative achievement. “The taxpayers of New York State will soon receive huge relief thanks to the deal the SALT Caucus brokered with Speaker Johnson and President Trump,” said Lawler. He emphasized President Trump’s role in supporting the bipartisan effort, stating, “With President Trump’s support, the bipartisan SALT Caucus succeeded in quadrupling the SALT deduction, which will be a massive lift to millions of New Yorkers.”
Highlighting his priorities since arriving in Washington, Lawler remarked on his dedication to this issue. “This was my number one focus in Washington from Day One of being here, and I’m thrilled that we find ourselves here today,” he said. He also called for fiscal restraint at the state level: “Now, it’s on New York State and Governor Hochul to rein in the reckless spending we’ve seen – and if that requires a change of leadership in the Governor’s mansion in 2026, so be it.”
Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District north of New York City. His district includes parts or all of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. Known for his bipartisan approach, Lawler was recognized as one of Congress’s most effective freshman lawmakers during its 118th session.
