Today, Congressman Mike Lawler from New York’s 17th District criticized Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for rejecting a continuing resolution passed by the House, which he claims is pushing the nation towards a government shutdown. Lawler accused Democrats of hypocrisy and playing political games with Americans’ lives.
“Chuck Schumer is playing politics with Americans’ lives by rejecting a continuing resolution that keeps the government open. His hypocrisy could not be clearer. After lambasting shutdowns in 2024, Chuck Schumer is now risking VA closures, frozen nutrition programs, and delayed military benefits,” said Congressman Mike Lawler. He referred to a post by Senator Schumer on social media platform X about programs that would be affected by a shutdown.
Rep. Jared Golden of Maine was the only Democrat to support the GOP-led resolution. He criticized his party’s “messaging gimmicks” and confirmed in a statement after the vote that the bill does not cut veterans care. Golden accused his colleagues of using misdirection to justify their votes.
Lawler highlighted this division among Democrats, pointing out their previous opposition to government shutdowns and suggesting they are now risking economic disruption and harm to families and veterans in Hudson Valley.
“New Yorkers deserve stability, not partisan chaos,” concluded Congressman Lawler.
Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties just north of New York City.
