Pearl River, NY – Congressman Mike Lawler has expressed his reaction to the Senate’s version of the Big Beautiful Bill, which proposes to return the State and Local Tax (SALT) cap to $10,000. This contrasts with the House version passed on May 22, which raised the SALT cap to $40,000 with an income limit.
Lawler stated, “I have been clear since Day one: sufficiently lifting the SALT Cap to deliver tax fairness to New Yorkers has been my top priority in Congress.” He emphasized that after negotiations, they managed to increase the cap from $10,000 to $40,000. Lawler declared his opposition if the Senate reduces this number: “If the Senate reduces the SALT number, I will vote NO, and the bill will fail in the House.”
He also mentioned ongoing discussions with various political figures: “I, along with my fellow SALT Caucus members, are actively engaging with Senators, House Leadership, and the White House and am confident the deal as previously negotiated will be in the final bill that is signed into law.”
Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District and is recognized for his bipartisan efforts. He was noted as one of the most effective freshman lawmakers in Congress.
