Congressman Mike Lawler of New York’s 17th Congressional District has asked the Internal Revenue Service to keep a local office in Rockland County open, following news that the IRS facility in West Nyack will close when its lease expires in November 2025.
The West Nyack IRS office, located at 242 W. Nyack Road, has served thousands of area residents and recorded nearly 1,000 in-person visits during Fiscal Year 2024. The IRS has not yet announced any plan for continuing taxpayer services in Rockland County after the closure.
“Closing this office without providing a suitable replacement will impose an undue burden on my constituents, many of whom rely on in-person services to resolve complex tax issues. Forcing them to travel farther distances—often without reliable access to transportation—adds unnecessary barriers to fulfilling their obligations as taxpayers,” wrote the lawmaker.
In his letter to Acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent, Lawler called for the immediate hiring of staff for the vacant position at the Taxpayer Assistance Center and proposed establishing a new office in Rockland County. He also suggested exploring options such as sharing space with the Social Security Administration’s local office or finding another location to maintain taxpayer access.
Lawler is recognized as one of Congress’s most bipartisan members and represents a district just north of New York City that includes all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated as the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress and ranked eighth overall among all members.
