Congressman Mike Lawler shared several updates on his official Twitter account this week, covering legislative progress, local emergency response, and upcoming opportunities for students in his district.
On July 26, 2025, Lawler announced the advancement of a bill he introduced: “This week, the Syria Sanctions Accountability Act was marked up and passed the Financial Services Committee with bipartisan support. I introduced this bill to modernize the existing sanctions regime on Syria. As the Trump Administration reviews sanctions policy, we must ensure”. The Syria Sanctions Accountability Act aims to update and strengthen U.S. sanctions against Syria. Lawler emphasized the importance of maintaining an effective sanctions framework as national policy is reviewed by the current administration.
On July 28, 2025, Lawler commended local law enforcement and emergency responders after a residential fire incident: “3 people were saved from a residential fire in Nyack today thanks to the heroic action of Orangetown Police Officers. A great job was done by all the first responders who were on scene.” The photo accompanying his message was credited to Rockland Buff.
Later that same day, Lawler informed constituents about an opportunity for students seeking nominations to U.S. Service Academies: “Congressman Lawler’s Service Academy Nomination Application will be live on the website on August 1, 2025. If you are interested in applying for a U.S. Service Academy nomination for acceptance into one of the academies in 2026 click here to be notified when the application goes”. This annual process allows eligible high school students from his district to seek congressional nominations required for admission into federal service academies.
Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District and has previously focused on issues including foreign policy and public safety.
