Congressman Mike Lawler has posted a series of tweets on October 8, 2025, criticizing Democratic leadership in Congress amid a government shutdown. In his posts, Lawler focuses on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, accusing them of prioritizing partisanship over bipartisan solutions.

In a tweet posted at 18:39 UTC, Lawler wrote, “While Chuck Schumer continues to stand on the Senate floor bloviating and doing absolutely nothing to reopen the government, the American people are suffering, creating unnecessary stress for families and small businesses.

Chuck, you said you wanted these not to expire – I’m”.

An hour later at 19:43 UTC, Lawler addressed what he described as partisan behavior among Democrats in the House. He stated, “Shutting down the government is cowardice to radicals in the Democratic Party, like AOC and the Squad. @RepJeffries has once again chosen partisanship over governance. Instead of coming to the table to work out a bipartisan compromise that extends ACA credits, he’s playing”.

A third tweet was posted at 20:00 UTC containing only a link: “https://t.co/UKa0mPSkXc”.

The comments from Congressman Lawler come as Congress faces another federal government shutdown due to disagreements between Republicans and Democrats over budget priorities and policy issues. Government shutdowns have significant effects on federal employees and disrupt services for citizens across the country. During such periods, essential services may continue while many other operations are halted until a funding agreement is reached.

Lawler’s criticism highlights ongoing tensions between Republican lawmakers and Democratic leaders such as Chuck Schumer—Senate Majority Leader—and Hakeem Jeffries—House Minority Leader—over approaches to resolving budget disputes. The extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) credits remains one point of contention in negotiations.
