Congressman Mike Lawler has recently used his social media platform to address ongoing concerns about the federal government shutdown and the actions of public officials in New York. In a series of posts published on November 6 and 7, 2025, Lawler highlighted issues surrounding government funding and criticized fellow politicians.
On November 6, Lawler urged New York Senators to take action regarding the ongoing government shutdown. He wrote, “I’m calling on Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand to get back to work and reopen the government. I voted weeks ago to fund the government and ensure full funding for programs like SNAP and WIC, critical lifelines for families, seniors, and service members.”
Later that day, Lawler commented on recent travel by state officials amid the shutdown. He stated, “Since we’re talking about an affordability crisis and are currently in the middle of a government shutdown, it’s embarrassing, quite frankly, to see Mayor-elect Mamdani and Governor Hochul, among other New York Democrats, flying down to Puerto Rico to pop bottles of champagne…”
On November 7, Lawler posted a tweet containing only a link: “https://t.co/Ck32yS2T7z”
The current government shutdown has led to disruptions in various federal programs. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provide essential support for low-income individuals and families across the United States. During previous shutdowns, there have been concerns about interruptions or delays in these services as agencies operate with limited staff or funding.
Lawler represents constituents from New York’s Hudson Valley region. His recent statements reflect broader debates in Congress over budget negotiations as well as scrutiny over elected officials’ conduct during periods of federal inactivity.
