Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th congressional district, has recently made several statements on social media regarding developments in the Middle East and ongoing negotiations over government funding and healthcare policy.
On October 9, 2025, Lawler commented on diplomatic progress in the Middle East, stating: “This is a historic moment in the Middle East. @POTUS and his team deserve all the credit in the world for making this happen.”
Turning to domestic issues, Lawler addressed concerns about potential increases in healthcare premiums and a possible government shutdown. On October 10, 2025, he wrote: “If the goal is to prevent Americans from facing a spike in healthcare premiums and to keep the government open, there’s a straightforward way to do it: Pass the clean CR in the Senate, extend the ACA subsidies, and stop holding the American people hostage.”
Later that same day, Lawler reiterated his stance on maintaining government operations without resorting to shutdowns. He stated: “I have always voted for a clean CR, regardless of who the President has been. We must keep the government open and funded. Shutting it down doesn’t serve any real purpose besides a political one. Enough, @SenSchumer !”
A continuing resolution (CR) is often used by Congress as a temporary measure to fund federal agencies when formal appropriations bills have not been enacted. Debates over “clean” versus “amended” CRs frequently occur during periods of partisan disagreement over budget priorities or policy riders.
Lawler’s reference to extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies highlights an ongoing debate about health insurance affordability for Americans. These subsidies were expanded under recent legislation but are set to expire unless Congress acts.
The comments come amid broader discussions about fiscal responsibility and bipartisan cooperation within Congress as deadlines for government funding approach.
