Today, the Enhanced Iran Sanctions Act passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee by voice vote. Chairman Mike Lawler of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee released a statement regarding this development.

The act aims to expand secondary sanctions on foreign entities that aid Iran’s illegal oil trade, sending a firm message that the U.S. will not support those assisting Iran’s activities. Chairman Lawler, together with Ranking Member Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, introduced the bipartisan bill in February this year.

“Today’s passage of the Enhanced Iran Sanctions Act in Committee marks a critical step toward holding Iran accountable for its destabilizing actions and curbing its access to the funds that go toward terrorism and undermine global security. This bill is a direct response to Iran’s exploitation of weak spots in the global sanctions framework and its continued attempts to skirt international efforts to limit its malign influence,” stated Chairman Mike Lawler.

He also highlighted the importance of this legislation receiving strong support in the committee. “I am proud that this bipartisan legislation has received strong support in the committee and is on its way to being debated and voted on in the full House. Our allies in the Middle East, including Israel, are depending on us to take decisive action to stop Iran from further destabilizing the region and advancing its nuclear ambitions. This bill is an important step in that direction,” concluded Chairman Lawler.

Congressman Lawler, representing New York’s 17th Congressional District, is known for his bipartisan efforts and was recognized as the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress.
