Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, has been recognized as the most effective Republican in the policy area of Civil Rights for the 118th Congress. The recognition comes from the Center for Effective Lawmaking (CEL), a partnership between the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and Vanderbilt University.

CEL’s recent analysis found that Congressman Lawler achieved an Interest & Legislative Effectiveness Score of 191.9 in civil rights, which was the highest score among all Members of Congress across 21 policy areas. The report also highlighted that he was not only among the most effective Republican House Members overall but was also rated as the single most effective freshman lawmaker in the entire House during this session.

The Center for Effective Lawmaking stated: “Our analysis found that Representative Lawler ranked as the most effective Republican House Member in the policy area of Civil Rights in the last Congress. This is in addition to our previous analysis showing him as one of the most effective Republican House Members in the last Congress overall, as well as the most effective freshman lawmaker in the entire House. We congratulate the Representative for his hard work and setting an example for promoting the importance of effective lawmaking.”

Congressman Lawler responded to this recognition by saying: “From the beginning, my focus has been delivering real results for the Hudson Valley. Whether it’s combating antisemitism, supporting civil rights protections, or pushing forward bipartisan solutions that can actually be signed into law, my goal has always been to make Congress work the way it should. I’m deeply grateful for this recognition, and I’ll continue fighting every day to deliver for the people of New York’s 17th District and make government work for you.”

Lawler serves a district just north of New York City that includes all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He is considered one of Congress’s most bipartisan members and was rated eighth overall in legislative effectiveness among his peers during his first term.
