Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) issued a statement today in response to U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation. The resignation follows reports of multiple security failures related to the attempted assassination of former President Trump, including reports that the shooter was seen on a roof twenty minutes before firing. Director Cheatle addressed these issues during a House Oversight Committee hearing yesterday, where she faced bipartisan scrutiny and calls for her resignation.

“Director Cheatle’s resignation is ten days overdue and does not absolve her or her agency’s failures,” said Congressman Lawler. “A more thorough investigation is needed to ensure full accountability. Our democracy came within inches of being irrevocably changed, and a father lost his life shielding his family from bullets. We now know this tragedy may have been preventable, and we must ensure it never happens again.”

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of the 118th Congress and represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which includes all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
