Congressman Mike Lawler of New York’s 17th Congressional District has signed a third discharge petition in the House of Representatives, aiming to bring a vote on extending enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits. This move comes as House leadership has not advanced any proposals related to the tax credits, which are set to expire.
Lawler said, “With House leadership refusing to bring any proposal to the floor, I am signing another discharge petition to force a vote and prevent higher health care costs for families in the Hudson Valley. Allowing the enhanced premium tax credits to expire would mean immediate premium hikes for working families, seniors, and small business owners in NY-17.”
He clarified that his support for the procedural measure does not mean he endorses the current bill as written. “This procedural step is not an endorsement of the bill written. I continue to believe any extension should be targeted, fiscally responsible, and include income eligibility limits and safeguards against fraud, similar to the bipartisan discussions underway in the Senate. But when leadership blocks action entirely, Congress has a responsibility to act. My priority is ensuring Hudson Valley families aren’t caught in the gridlock,” Lawler stated.
Lawler represents a district just north of New York City that includes Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He has been recognized as one of Congress’s most bipartisan members and was rated as the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress.
