Congressman Mike Lawler of New York’s 17th District, along with Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz, French Hill, Josh Gottheimer, and Tom Suozzi, has spearheaded a bipartisan effort urging President Trump to focus on securing the release of American hostages held in Gaza. The appeal comes in the form of a letter endorsed by 45 House colleagues.
The hostages were taken during coordinated terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths including more than 40 Americans. Among the hostages originally captured were twelve Americans; five remain captive: Edan Alexander, Omer Neutra, Itay Chen, Gadi Haggai, and Judi Weinstein Haggai. Currently, Edan Alexander is believed to be the only survivor.
The lawmakers emphasized the urgency of their release: “Securing the release of all five American hostages is critical as every additional moment in captivity is a matter of life or death,” they stated. They called for President Trump to use all available options and diplomatic channels to secure their freedom.
The representatives also highlighted the responsibility of the U.S. government to protect its citizens. “Our government’s most solemn responsibility is to keep Americans safe,” they noted. They urged collaboration with regional allies to ensure both Edan’s release and the return of deceased hostages’ remains.
Congressman Lawler has been recognized for his bipartisan approach and effectiveness as a freshman lawmaker representing areas north of New York City.
