Congressman Mike Lawler, U.S. Representative for New York’s 17th congressional district, recently addressed several issues on his official Twitter account.
On May 4, 2026, Lawler commented on the ongoing national debate regarding abortion policy and the Supreme Court’s recent actions. He stated, “I’ve long opposed efforts to enact a national abortion ban, and I’m glad to see the Supreme Court stop this effort at creating a shadow ban. As I have said in the past, access to Mifepristone should be determined by state law and the FDA, not congress or the courts.” The statement follows a period of heightened attention toward federal versus state authority over abortion regulations.
Later that day, on International Firefighters’ Day, Lawler acknowledged emergency responders’ service. He wrote on May 4: “Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we recognize the brave men and women who run toward danger when others are told to run away. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our communities do not go unnoticed. We honor those who have lost their lives”. International Firefighters’ Day is observed globally each year on May 4 to honor firefighters’ dedication and commemorate those who have died in the line of duty.
On May 5, Lawler marked Cinco de Mayo with a message recognizing Mexican heritage. He posted: “Happy Cinco de Mayo! Cinco de Mayo is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Mexican people and is celebrated today as a vibrant recognition of Mexican heritage and culture. Wishing everyone celebrating a safe and festive day!” The holiday commemorates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 and has become widely celebrated in both Mexico and the United States as an occasion highlighting Mexican culture.
Lawler’s comments reflect his ongoing engagement with constituents on social policy debates as well as recognition of cultural observances.
