Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, has recently used his social media platform to comment on both domestic political disputes and developments in international diplomacy.
On October 11, 2025, Lawler criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a tweet: “Every day gets better” for @SenSchumer while the American people suffer. You’re holding the government hostage to appease the far left. Stop cowering to your base and do your job. He accused Schumer of prioritizing party interests over national welfare amid ongoing government funding debates.
Later that day, Lawler highlighted an initiative he led with fellow New York Republican colleagues, targeting both Senator Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for their stance on a potential government shutdown. In his post dated October 11, 2025, he stated: Yesterday, I led a letter with my NY GOP colleagues to @SenSchumer and @SenGillibrand calling out their hypocrisy for shutting the government down. For decades, they backed clean CRs to keep the government open — now they’re the ones engaging in the “politics of idocracy.”
Shifting focus to foreign affairs on October 12, 2025, Lawler expressed support for President Joe Biden’s administration regarding progress toward peace in the Middle East. He wrote: We are on the verge of a momentous peace agreement that will establish long-term stability in the Middle East. @POTUS and his administration deserve all the credit in the world for negotiating this peace agreement and securing the release of all the hostages.
The recent dispute over government funding comes amid broader concerns about possible federal shutdowns due to disagreements between congressional leaders. Continuing budget standoffs have been a recurring issue in U.S. politics as lawmakers negotiate continuing resolutions (CRs) or full-year appropriations bills.
Congressman Lawler’s remarks reflect ongoing partisan tensions regarding fiscal policy as well as bipartisan acknowledgment when it comes to significant diplomatic achievements.
