Congressman Mike Lawler has recently used his social media platform to comment on ongoing legislative debates and community events. Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th congressional district, addressed both the possibility of a government shutdown and local memorial activities in a series of posts published between September 29 and September 30, 2025.

On September 29, 2025, Lawler criticized Senate Democrats’ approach to government funding negotiations. He stated, “Under Joe Biden’s presidency, Senate Republicans voted 13 times for a clean CR, ending the filibuster and funding the government. But today? When we offer the same thing, @SenSchumer retreats. It’s cowardice. There is no acceptable excuse to shut down the government. I voted to”.

The following evening, Lawler highlighted his participation in a community event marking the anniversary of October 7th, 2023. He wrote on September 30: “Tonight, I joined the Jewish community in Yorktown for their annual memorial commemorating October 7th, 2023. Thank you to Talia Pierson, the Justice Brandeis Law Society, Chabad of Yorktown, and the Israel Forever Foundation for hosting this moving event.”

Later that day, he reiterated concerns about potential disruptions caused by legislative gridlock. In his post from September 30, he said: “A government shutdown is disastrous for the American people and for the economy. Democrats have said time and again that we have to keep the government open and funded, we have to pass clean CR’s, and under Barack Obama and Joe Biden, they did it without question.”

These statements come amid heightened tensions in Congress over funding measures known as continuing resolutions (CRs), which are used to keep federal agencies operating when full appropriations bills have not been passed.
