The Cancer Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital is offering free colorectal cancer screenings on July 25, 2025. The screenings are available for men and women aged 45 and older who are at average risk for colorectal cancer. Residents from Rockland, Orange, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, and Ulster Counties in New York State can participate. The event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The screening involves a Fecal Occult Blood Test or Fecal Immunochemical Test Kit funded by the Cancer Services Program of the Hudson Valley and Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Registration is advised to ensure an appointment. Spanish-speaking assistance is provided, and those interested can call 845-348-8511 to check eligibility and register.
Eligible participants will receive a test kit to collect a stool sample at home. Depending on the instructions, the sample can be mailed to a lab or brought to a doctor’s office. The test checks for hidden blood in the stool, which could indicate polyps or early colorectal cancer. A negative result usually means no further action is needed until the next recommended test. A positive result requires further tests like a colonoscopy.
For those with abnormal findings during screening, follow-up diagnostic services are available through the CSP at no cost for eligible individuals. A case manager will assist with scheduling follow-up appointments.
