Each year, approximately 3,500 infants in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly during sleep, as reported by the American Academy of Pediatrics. These deaths are often attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or accidental suffocation or strangulation. SIDS remains the leading cause of death for babies between one month and one year old in the country, accounting for about 2,500 infant deaths annually.

Montefiore Nyack Hospital has partnered with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services to support the Cribs for Kids Program. This initiative provides families with a safe sleep space for their infants through a free portable crib distribution program. Eligible families receive a Graco Pack ‘n Play crib, two fitted sheets, and safe sleep education from the hospital’s Community Health and Wellness Department.

To qualify for this program, individuals must be primary caregivers of children under one year old. Expectant parents or those with infants under one year can apply if they need a secure sleeping environment for their child. Participants must sign a hold harmless agreement to receive these benefits.

A secure sleeping environment not only improves an infant’s sleep quality but also reduces stress for caregivers. The combination of receiving a crib and educational support helps parents feel more prepared in their caregiving roles.

The hospital advises following the ABCs of Safe Sleep guidelines: “Alone – no blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals; Back – always place a baby on their back to sleep; Crib – in a safety-approved crib, not an adult bed or couch.”

For further information on the program, contact Montefiore Nyack Hospital’s Community Health and Wellness at 845-348-2876 or The Jacobs Family Maternity Center at 845-348-2620.
