Reps. Mike Lawler and Pat Ryan have reintroduced the bipartisan Lower Grocery Prices Act in an effort to address the high cost of living, particularly focusing on grocery affordability. The proposed legislation seeks to hold accountable those who engage in price-gouging practices.
The bill mandates the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a 20-year analysis of grocery prices, suggest solutions for reducing costs, and develop a national strategy to alleviate high prices and improve affordability.
Rep. Mike Lawler stated, "I'm proud to partner with Congressman Ryan on this common sense, bipartisan bill aimed at helping middle and working-class New Yorkers." He emphasized the need to focus on reducing grocery prices and easing the cost of living for New York residents.
Rep. Pat Ryan highlighted the financial strain faced by families, saying, "The financial pressure folks are feeling right now is intense, and it’s across the board – we need an all-of-the-above strategy to bring costs down for Hudson Valley families." He reiterated his commitment to addressing various affordability issues such as groceries, housing, prescription drugs, and Social Security.
Lawler represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
