On March 4, 2025, Congressmen Mike Lawler (NY-17), Michael McCaul (TX-10), and Richard Hudson (NC-09) sent a letter to President Trump. The letter urged the President to maintain the State Department’s Office of the Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts (CARE) and its Enduring Welcome program. These initiatives assist Afghan allies who supported U.S. military and diplomatic missions in resettling in the United States.
The letter highlighted the importance of these programs, especially since the Taliban considers those who collaborated with the U.S. as enemies and continues to target them. It also noted that Afghans involved in this program undergo thorough screening before relocation, distinguishing CARE's efforts from other immigration policies.
“CARE’s Enduring Welcome program is the last remaining lifeline for those who risked everything to support our mission in Afghanistan,” stated Congressman Lawler (NY-17). “These brave men and women stood with us in the face of incredible danger, and now we must stand with them. It is our moral responsibility to protect these individuals, who stood by American forces during the war in Afghanistan, and I will continue to advocate for their safety and resettlement in the United States.”
Congressman Lawler represents New York's 17th Congressional District, located just north of New York City, encompassing all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
