Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed his views on Sweden's accession to NATO. Lawler emphasized the importance of a strong NATO for the United States' national security interests and the peaceful future of Europe. He stated, “A strong NATO is essential to the United States’ national security interests and the peaceful future of Europe on the whole.”

Highlighting Sweden's contributions, Lawler noted, “Sweden is at the forefront of a number of critical military technologies, and having them as a NATO member will prove beneficial to the United States and our allies.” He also acknowledged Hungary's role in the ratification process, stating, “With Hungary’s ratification of Sweden’s accession, we are welcoming another capable democratic nation into NATO, strengthening the alliance and sending a clear message to agitators like Russia.”

In a firm message directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lawler warned, “And to Vladimir Putin, I say this - hands off of Europe, or face the consequences.” The congressman's statement comes following Hungary's ratification of Sweden's accession to NATO, solidifying Sweden's official entry into the alliance.

The 17th Congressional District of New York, represented by Congressman Lawler, encompasses areas north of New York City, including parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
