Congressman Mike Lawler, representing New York's 17th District, has joined forces with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to urge the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to lift its pause on the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. This program is essential for providing security funding to nonprofits at high risk of terrorist attacks, including faith-based institutions and houses of worship.

In a letter addressed to FEMA Acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton, the lawmakers emphasized the importance of continuing support for this program. "The Administration has made clear its goal to protect Americans from terrorist threats both foreign and domestic, as well as to respond to the rise in hate crimes," they wrote. They further stated that "supporting the NSGP is critical" and noted its longstanding bipartisan backing.

The group highlighted how the grant program equips vulnerable institutions with necessary security measures such as bollards, reinforced doors, CCTV cameras, and emergency alert systems. These tools are crucial in preventing loss of life during potential attacks.

Lauren Wolman from the Anti-Defamation League expressed gratitude towards Representatives Gottheimer and Lawler for their leadership in this matter. She stated that "the Nonprofit Security Grant Program is a lifeline for vulnerable institutions" and stressed the need for efficient disbursement of funds amidst growing threats.

Other members who signed the letter include Reps. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Gabe Amo (RI-01), Michael McCaul (TX-10), Jared Moskowitz (FL-23), Max Miller (OH-07), among others across various states.

Lawler's district includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties in New York.
