Congressman Mike Lawler has reintroduced the SALT Fairness and Marriage Penalty Elimination Act in the 119th Congress. This legislation aims to increase the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap to $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for married couples filing jointly. The act is part of an effort to address what Lawler describes as an unjust penalty in the current tax code.
Lawler emphasized his commitment to alleviating financial burdens for residents of the Lower Hudson Valley. "For too long, the people of the Hudson Valley have shouldered the weight of some of the highest taxes in the nation," he stated. He further explained that the SALT cap has exacerbated this issue by unfairly penalizing middle-class families in his district.
He also highlighted a broader objective: "I’m committed to solving this as part of a broader effort to tackle the affordability crisis millions of New York Families are facing." According to Lawler, lifting the SALT cap would provide relief to many New Yorkers and help reduce migration to states with lower taxes.
While advocating for a full repeal of the SALT cap, Lawler noted that passing this bill would offer immediate relief for New York. "Seeing the SALT Fairness and Marriage Penalty Elimination Act signed into law would deliver immediate relief for the state of New York," he concluded.
Lawler is recognized as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which includes parts or all of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
