Congressman Mike Lawler has voiced strong opposition to the newly implemented congestion pricing in New York City, criticizing Governor Kathy Hochul and MTA Chairman John Lieber. The policy, which began at midnight, aims to reduce traffic congestion by charging drivers entering certain areas of the city.
In a statement released from Pearl River, NY, Congressman Lawler expressed his disapproval of the initiative. "Kathy Hochul and her pal John Lieber at the MTA have decided that rather than fixing the unbelievable waste, fraud, and abuse at the MTA, they’re going to tax the hell out of working New Yorkers instead," he stated. He described congestion pricing as "a corrupt cash grab" and criticized Governor Hochul for celebrating its implementation.
Lawler also took issue with John Lieber's role in promoting the program. "To see John Lieber celebrating the beginning of this cash grab with a sign unveiling and pomp and circumstance shows this whole thing is a total sham," he said. He condemned what he sees as negligence toward addressing internal issues within the MTA while imposing additional financial burdens on residents.
The congressman further argued that this decision disregards essential workers such as police officers, nurses, firefighters, teachers, small business owners, and others who may prefer driving into New York City for safety reasons. He remarked on Governor Hochul's political standing: "Kathy Hochul has shown she’s learned nothing since her near-loss in 2022 or the gains made in New York by President Donald Trump in 2024."
Congressman Lawler represents New York's 17th Congressional District. Known for his bipartisan approach in Congress, his district includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
