Turtle Crossing
Pregnant snapping turtles will soon be on the move across Western Highway in West Nyack as they migrate to lay their eggs.
The The Turtles of Western Highway are looking for volunteer crossing guards to help signal traffic if turtles are in the road - see the flyer below for more details.
While The Turtles of Western Highway group has built nesting mounds that do not require the turtles to cross the street and installed temporary barrier fencing to help prevent the turtles from entering the road, we ask that all residents slow down and be on the look out for these turtles as they begin their migratory journeys.
These turtle crossing signs are installed by the Rockland County Highway Department each year to help raise awareness and hopefully help protect the turtles during their journey.
