Washington, D.C. - Congressman Mike Lawler has sought clarification from the Jacob Burns Film Center after the organization decided not to screen the documentary "October 8th." The film, which examines antisemitism on campuses, social media, and public spaces following the attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, has been deemed an important piece highlighting challenges faced by Jews in the U.S.

Despite its significance, the film center's refusal to show "October 8th" contrasts with its decision to screen "No Other Land," a pro-Palestinian documentary which has also sparked controversy. Congressman Lawler questions this selective screening process, noting a possible bias in film curation.

The backdrop of this decision involves Eric Hynes, the center's Director of Film Curation and Programming. Hynes’ past remarks have drawn scrutiny, such as signing a petition accusing Israel of genocide, urging the release of Palestinian prisoners, and describing Israel's actions as apartheid. His tweets have further fueled criticism, with claims of Israel committing genocide and using international events as a guise for military operations.

"I am appalled that the Jacobs Burns Film Center did not engage in due diligence in their hiring process, choosing to hand over the reins of curation at their esteemed institution to someone with deeply radical and anti-Israel views," said Congressman Lawler. He questioned whether Hynes' personal bias affected the decision to not screen "October 8th," given Hynes’ support of protests at Columbia University and CUNY, labeled antisemitic by some.

Congressman Lawler's statements reflect concerns over what he perceives as an imbalanced film offering by the center. "The choice to screen No Other Land, while simultaneously denying screening of October 8th, calls directly into question Mr. Hynes’ intent, and given his long track record of being anti-Israel and supporting antisemitic protests, I fear the worst," he concluded. Lawler has called on the Jacob Burns Film Center to reflect on its choices to ensure a balanced presentation to the community in Northern Westchester.

Congressman Lawler, representing New York's 17th Congressional District, is noted for his bipartisan efforts and was recognized as the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress.
