Congressmen Mike Lawler and Claudia Tenney have put forth legislation aimed at halting the practice of ranked choice voting in federal elections. The bill, named the One Vote One Choice Act, intends to maintain a straightforward voting process, preserving voter confidence and the integrity of the voting system in both the states and the District of Columbia.

Lawler, representing New York's 17th Congressional District, criticized ranked choice voting for distorting election results. "For centuries, citizens of the United States have been able to cast their votes with one vote and one voice," he stated, expressing his concern over the impact of ranked choice voting on election outcomes.

He highlighted the 2021 mayoral primary in New York City, where delays in announcing the winner led to public uncertainty. "Outcomes like that are problematic for everyone and are exactly why we need to ban the practice of ranked choice voting at the federal level," Lawler remarked.

Tenney, representing New York's 24th District and the chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, also condemned ranked choice voting for causing confusion and affecting election results. She endorsed the One Vote One Choice Act, which she believes will enhance transparency and confidence in the electoral process.

Lawler is known for his bipartisan approach and effectiveness as a freshman lawmaker, representing a district encompassing parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties, just north of New York City.
