On June 9, 2023, House Foreign Affairs Committee Member and Representative Mike Lawler (NY-17) released the following statement in response to reports that the Chinese Communist Party is establishing an espionage facility in Cuba.
“China, our greatest geopolitical foe, has taken another step toward usurping diplomatic norms and undermining our national security,” said Congressman Lawler. “First they violated our sovereignty with their transcontinental spy balloon that traversed multiple sensitive military sites, and now they are plotting to build a spy facility within 100 miles of our shores, well within range of U.S. military bases and U.S. ship traffic.”
“With adversaries like China, Cuba, Russia, and Iran working in tandem, we cannot afford a foreign policy of weakness,” concluded Congressman Lawler. “The threats posed by this new axis of evil have never been closer to home.”
New York's 17th Congressional District is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
