Congressman Lawler Introduces Legislation to Award Congressional Gold Medal to NY-17 Constituent James Earl Jones

Today, on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth), Congressman Lawler introduced legislation to honor James Earl Jones with a Congressional Gold Medal. The James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act is co-sponsored by Representatives Ritchie Torres (D,NY-15) and Marc Molinaro (R,NY-19).

James Earl Jones, known for his iconic roles such as Darth Vader in "Star Wars" and Mufasa in Disney's "The Lion King," is set to receive this prestigious award. In response to the honor, Jones expressed his gratitude, stating, "As a devoted fan of history, I’m deeply honored to receive an award that dates back to America’s founding...I hope this honor will underscore the importance of the performing arts to our culture--and our future as a nation."

Congressman Lawler, representing New York's 17th District, where Jones is a constituent, highlighted the actor's contributions, mentioning, "James Earl Jones shattered racial barriers, served our country in the United States Army, and warmed the hearts of hundreds of millions with his countless roles." Lawler expressed his pride in introducing the legislation to recognize Jones's achievements.

Congressman Torres also praised Jones, emphasizing his impact on Black American excellence and Hollywood. He stated, "The American people owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Jones for his tireless devotion to his craft," showing support for the legislation to award Jones with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Similarly, Congressman Molinaro acknowledged Jones's influence on popular culture, mentioning, "There’s no Luke Skywalker (my favorite character) without Darth Vader, and no Darth Vader without the genius of James Earl Jones." He commended Jones for his acting career and efforts in breaking down racial barriers.

The introduction of the James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act aims to honor the actor's remarkable career and lasting contributions to the arts and society.
