Congressman Mike Lawler has introduced a new piece of legislation aimed at addressing the issue of foreign governments wrongfully detaining American citizens. The proposed bill, named the State Sponsor of Wrongful or Unlawful Detention Act, seeks to hold accountable those nations that engage in such activities by designating them as state sponsors of wrongful or unlawful detention.

Under this designation, countries would face certain sanctions and would be barred from receiving foreign assistance. Additionally, this status would be included in travel advisories, and the State Department is expected to collaborate with airlines to issue warnings for travelers.

"The number of incidents in which American citizens have been taken hostage while traveling abroad is deeply disturbing, and foreign governments that repeatedly engage in this behavior must be held accountable," stated Congressman Lawler. "Congress must do more to protect Americans and deter incidents from happening in the first place. The State Sponsor of Wrongful or Unlawful Detention Act will ensure this is the case and I look forward to working with colleagues in both parties to get this bill passed as swiftly as possible."

Congressman Lawler represents New York's 17th Congressional District, located just north of New York City, encompassing all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He is recognized as one of the most bipartisan members of the 118th Congress.
