Today, a group of New York Congressional Republicans, led by Congressman Mike Lawler, criticized Governor Kathy Hochul's congestion pricing plan during a press conference on Capitol Hill. Joining Lawler were Representatives Anthony D'Esposito, Nicole Malliotakis, and Nick LaLota.
Congressman Lawler described the congestion pricing initiative as "nothing more than a scam on working families in New York." He expressed concern over the financial burden it would impose on residents, stating that "folks are struggling to make ends meet," and accused Governor Hochul of imposing "yet another tax onto the backs of hard-working New Yorkers."
Lawler highlighted the issue of fare evasion on public transportation, noting that "over 400,000 people ride the subway every single day without paying." He argued that instead of addressing this problem, Governor Hochul plans to "tax the cops, teachers, firefighters, nurses, and union workers heading South of 60th Street to keep New York City running."
The Congressman further criticized the cost implications for residents. He claimed that fare evaders cost the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) over $700 million annually while asserting that Governor Hochul intends to charge residents $2,500 each year. Lawler urged the governor to address issues within the MTA rather than "punishing residents of New York for trying to get to theirs."
Lawler represents New York's 17th Congressional District and is known for his bipartisan approach in Congress. His district is located just north of New York City and includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
