Assemblyman John W. McGowan (R,C-Rockland) has issued a statement regarding a recent break-in at his home in Pearl River. The incident occurred on Friday, December 13, 2024, shortly after 4:00 a.m., when multiple masked individuals were seen outside his residence. One of the intruders forcibly entered the home while McGowan and his wife Christine were asleep.
McGowan recounted that their dogs alerted them to the intrusion, allowing him to chase off the perpetrators and contact law enforcement. "This experience was terrifying and alarming to say the least," he said, but noted that no injuries occurred and nothing was stolen. He expressed gratitude for this outcome, particularly as Christine is eight months pregnant.
He thanked the Orangetown Police Department and Rockland County Sheriff’s Department for their quick response and support. "We are incredibly appreciative of...their prompt response, diligent efforts and the care shown to us," McGowan stated.
The investigation into the break-in is ongoing, limiting what McGowan can disclose at this time. However, he emphasized the importance of community vigilance: "I believe it’s important for everyone to be on alert." As a former Rockland prosecutor, he acknowledged that crime exists in all communities but noted how this personal experience heightened his awareness of vulnerability even within one's own home.
McGowan advised residents to take precautions during the holiday season by securing doors, windows, cars, and valuables. He remarked on varying motivations behind criminal acts but stressed the need for vigilance regardless of intent.
In closing remarks directed towards dog owners, McGowan highlighted their pets' role in preventing further harm during such incidents: "Their loyalty in such a time of need can never be underestimated."
He concluded with holiday greetings from himself and his family: “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a prosperous and healthy New Year to all!”
