Tonight, a group of New York Republican representatives has called for an investigation into the state's Democratic leadership. This follows the introduction of legislation by State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to modify election laws. Representatives Mike Lawler, Claudia Tenney, Nicole Malliotakis, Nick Langworthy, and Andrew Garbarino have sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi. They are requesting a racketeering investigation into figures including Kathy Hochul, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Hakeem Jeffries. The representatives argue that efforts to alter election law could delay the special election for New York’s 21st Congressional District after Rep. Elise Stefanik's nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

In their letter, the representatives stated, “Any delay or postponement in calling a special election to fill a vacancy in the House of Representatives is not just undemocratic, but it is unconstitutional as well." They also mentioned past failed attempts regarding New York’s elections, such as efforts to gerrymander congressional districts.

The representatives highlighted that "Even New York’s state courts have said there should be no delay in calling special elections to fill vacancies in public office." They referenced a 2009 ruling by the New York State Court of Appeals requiring vacancies to be filled "in the shortest space of time reasonably possible."

Further claims were made about Minority Leader Jeffries' involvement in delaying the election process. The representatives cited a New York Times article indicating Jeffries’ alleged push for extending the timeline to keep the seat vacant longer than necessary. According to them, this scheme involved private phone calls and meetings at a Manhattan steakhouse.

Congressman Mike Lawler remarked on what he sees as an attempt to deny representation: “Shame on Hakeem Jeffries and Kathy Hochul for conspiring to deny residents of New York’s 21st Congressional District representation.” He described these actions as "blatantly corrupt" and accused them of subverting voter intentions.

Lawler further criticized both leaders stating: “Kathy Hochul and Hakeem Jeffries should be ashamed of themselves if they were capable of having any shame.” He predicted political consequences for both individuals due to these events.

Lawler represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which includes areas north of New York City such as Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
