Assemblyman John McGowan (R,C-Rockland) has called for additional funding in the state budget to support New York’s local roads, bridges, and culverts. McGowan attended a press conference on Feb. 15, 2024, advocating for increased Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funding.
During the conference, McGowan emphasized the importance of local roads and highways, stating, "Local roads and highway infrastructure serve as the backbone of our communities, facilitating economic growth and connecting people to essential services." He highlighted the benefits of well-maintained infrastructure, including improved safety, emergency response times, and access to vital services. McGowan stressed that investing in transportation systems is crucial for community well-being and long-term prosperity.
Expressing gratitude to Orangetown Highway Superintendent Jim Dean and Clarkstown Highway Superintendent Bob Milone for their attendance, McGowan announced plans for a series of press conferences to underscore the critical need for adequate CHIPS funding. He underlined the importance of supporting highway departments and ensuring the safety of all residents.
The Assembly Minority, led by McGowan, is pushing for the restoration of a proposed $60 million cut to CHIPS base aid and a $200 million increase in CHIPS base funding, totaling $798.1 million. McGowan's advocacy for enhanced connectivity, safety, and accessibility through CHIPS funding aims to improve the quality of life for future generations.
